Me myself and Mad Men
November 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hello, My name is Hannah Trevino; I am currently enrolled at UC Berkley where my studies have taken a backseat to my current political activism in my community. Berkley has been on the forefront of the anti-Vietnam and antimilitary protest that marked the Sixties. I am apart of the Peoples Republic of Berkeley and have dreams to one-day end this war with the power of diplomacy vs. guns. Peace is possible if we only join hands fight fear! Now where’s my drink?

The costume designers behind AMC’s Mad Men have the lucky job of dressing the cast in the fab looks that made 1960’s the sixties. With Janie Bryant as the design teams ringleader she continues to creating looks taken straight from the era, that have made the show come to life with authenticity. Check out this pair of onscreen lovers.
Remind you of anyone?
It could be just coincidence but I think the costumers behind the show are less then mad when it comes to there taste level. Transcending the show into something other than just a plot line and bringing to life what has been left behind when time ran on by leaving the fashion in the dust, and onto the racks of thrift stores. I only recently began to investigate the inner workings of this show, but its no surprise why everyone has come a
little mad over it, who doesn’t love watching men and women who actually look presentable vs. the drab that has become our society. Hats off to you AMC for making coats and ties look good, and bringing back a splash of glam to our society. You don’t have to go far to see how Mad Men has grabbed the attention of the fashion world and become a influential inspiration for many collections that has continue through the past 3 seasons. Fashion has always mirrored its history and with a recession in toe and a society that has been forced to rethink its priorities fashion has followed lead. Just look at the conservative yet glam 1960’s looks that been taking the runway since Mad Men’s debut. Michel Kors 2009 fall ready to wear for instance created looks that blended the past and present. Glamour is back
ladies, and men of the world take note, sweat pants were never acceptable for anything other than a jog, and if the men of Mad Men prove anything, its cool to look good, so go out buy a tie shave your face and stop looking drab god damit, its the 21st century for Christ sake, aren’t we suppose to be moving forwards not backwards. Cheers designers such as Monique lhuillier who are taking the eras silhouettes to create modern day formal where such as she did in her 2009 fall ready to wear collection. Team Glamour

Time after time?

The social relevance in Mad Men is clear; from just viewing episode one the line seams black and white. The men are Gods who
need women to tie there shoes, and look good doing it. Although many of us like to avoid it, we are in the middle of what has become a war that has gone way to far. Similar to the one that occurred during the turmoil times of the 1960’s.
I am currently reading Tom Brokaws bestseller Boom! Which tells the stories of those who were brought up in the changing times that became the 1960’s. In it I have learned of the people who lived within this time, who became the change, who saw the pain of a nation that was being chained to secrecy and lies while men got drafted into a war, sounds familiar? Of coarse we are fascinated with Mad Men, a series dedicated to reminding us where we came from and what has happened since then, not much apparently. Though we have taken baby steps towards the future, we still live in a time where change is only a figure of the imagination and left to rot in selfish priority. What does mad men have to do with the present, a series that humor is darker than my coffee, I think we find it relevant to the sweetness that has followed this time. Tom Brokaw sums it up quite beautifully in Boom! By saying… “Wonder bras have replaced burned bras, and men’s haircuts are short again. Communes are out, and trophy houses are in. Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson have sold many more records than Joan Baez ever did. School busing was a failure, and conservatives dominate talk radio.” They say time repeats itself, but maybe this show is a reminder of what happens when you don’t learn from the past, and what we should avoid in the future, that or accept the idea of living with a lifetime of historical regret. Cheers America, lets fight the good fight.
